Uncle Starbucks Wants You To Empty Your Pockets

Yay Coffee! So let me get this straight, people are excited that Starbucks is switching its WiFi Hotspot service over to AT&T? Please, whatever these people are taking, I want some.

What’s my issue with all of this? Currently, I can go to Panera Bread or even McDonalds and get absolutely free access to their WiFi Hotspot. But if I want to go into Starbucks I have to pay for it? I think that is total bass ackwords and all these other blogs discussing how great this is need to start thinking for themselves.

If you go to your public library,  I’m going to assume they have free internet and perhaps even WiFi. Any college campus will be the same. The focus in advancing connecting to the internet is completely geared around providing access for entire towns in the future. Why on earth would a company charge for people for a service that will bring customers to their store? Apparently the do it because fools out there have no problem spending there money on it.

If you bleed Starbucks, you’ll probably want to know how much more you’ll be spending over your quad americano. You’ll be able to get 2 hours free with a Starbucks gift card, but after that it’ll run you either $3.99 for two hours or $19.99 for a month. If you’re one of those suckers that had previously subscribed to Starbucks T-Mobile hotspot service, AT&T is nice enough to transfer your contract over to them. Isn’t that sweet.

Apple Time Capsule

Macworld 2008 will be definitely remembered as one of the most significant IT events of this year. It’s no need to specify all presented stuff, I want to tell you a little about Apple Time Capsule

Apple Time Capsule

This is a wireless hard drive from Apple that uses wireless network controller (supports 802.11a, b, g and n draft2.0 specification). This storage is really versatile – you can use it as file server for your media files, it has all necessary interfaces for working with other Apple’s wireless devices like iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV. But the main and most significant feature (it actually has brought the name for this gadget) is backup.

Apple Time Capsule can be mounted as wireless hard drive to any PC or Mac computer and will have special file backup & recovery software in package. It is already available for pre-ordering in Apple Store. The prices are $299.00 for 500 GB model and $499.00 for 1TB model.

Chumby – the new fancy internet device

Have you already heard about Chumby? This is a compact Linux-based device with touchscreen that displays any information from internet. It’s not a usual WiFi internet console – it has AC power only and is not portable. Basically it’s primary usage is showing set of small user-customizable Adobe Flash animations that deliver real-time information. Technically it’s built of 350MHz ARM9 controller, has 64MB of SDRAM, 64MB of NAND flash ROM, a 320×240 3.5 inch TFT LCD touchscreen running at 12Hz, stereo 2W speakers, an audio output, an integrated microphone, two USB 2.0 ports, and integrated WiFi.

Chumby

Working with Chumby is very easy. All you need is to activate the device via internet, download all necessary widgets (every widget is made for viewing some website, blog, rss feed etc., it could be a gem, media viewer or anything else) and plug it in electric socket. Everything will be downloaded via wi-fi, and you can control the device with touchscreen and stock sensors – those four tactile “buttons” on edges. Yeah, you squeeze this soft insets and they’ll work like actual buttons.

My opinion is that Chumby could be a good replacement for usual kitchen or bedroom TV. It can replace such usual things as morning newspaper or night movie viewing. The main disadvantage that it’s still not a portable gadget, but anyway it is worth its price – $179.95 (free shipping).
